PM Modi on the launch of fit India movement on national sports day


Fit India Movement:

29 August 2019, PM Modi launched the Fit India Movement on the occasion of National Sports day at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium complex in New Delhi.

"Healthy India is my goal," PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister said, "Only a fit person, fit family, and a fit society will pave way for a great and new India."

"There is zero investment in Fit India movement, returns unlimited," says Prime Minister.

PM Modi said, "Be it boxing, badminton, tennis or any sport, our athletes are giving new wings to our aspirations. Their medals are not just a result of their hard work but also a reflection of a new India's confidence."

The University Grants Commission asked all the universities and colleges to encourage their staff and students to walk at least 10,000 steps on the National Sports Day and follow it up in their daily routine as well.

He says, "On this day a great sportsperson was born, Major Dhyan Chand. He amazed the world with his fitness, stamina, and hockey stick."

Committee to advice on the Fit India Movement:

A committee comprising government officials, members of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), national sports federations, private bodies, and fitness promoters was also formed to advise the government on the Fit India Movement.

The 28-member committee, under the chairmanship of sports minister Kiren Rijiju, has 12 members from the government, including secretaries of Sports, Secondary Education, Ayush, Youth Affairs, among others.


Major Dhyanchand Singh:

'Major Dhyanchand Singh’ also known as ‘Wizard of Hockey’ was the biggest hockey player of India.

He joined the Indian army as a soldier in 1922 after completing basic education.

Dhyanchand with his team won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He scored over 400 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948.

After his death, the Indian Postal Department also paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand and issued stamps in his honor.

The National Stadium of Delhi has also renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, Delhi.

National Sports Day:

29 August, National Sports Day is organized every year in the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the President of the country gives National Sports Awards to the respective winners.

On the National Sports Day, players and former players are honored with many other awards like Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, and Dronacharya Award.
